The definition of disability is inability to do basic daily activities such as walking, hearing, seeing, breathing, standing up, reading, studying, talking, learning, thinking etc. due to physical or mental limitations. According to the research conducted by UNESCO, %10 of Turkish population is considered to be disabled. Research showed that frequency of oral and dental health problems increases in disabled people. Because of the fact that both the state and private sector do not conduct sufficient research about solving the problems of disabled in oral and dental health, these people do not benefit from dentistry service sufficiently. Solving the problem is necessary for both dentists and disabled people.
Problems such as lack of education of dentists in dental treatment of disabled people, believing that more time is required for treating the disabled (but its economical return is not satisfactory, necessity to do extra investment about dental treatment procedures, cause dentists to avoid treating disabled people.
Problems of the disabled while reaching dentistry services are:
-Accessibility
- Insufficient number of educated dentist
- Type of disability
- Approaches of parents of caretakers to oral and dental health
- Side effects of drugs they use
-Medical problems
-Financial concerns etc.
Prevention of oral and dental health problems in children who require special attention
It is a natural right of all children to have healthy teeth and gum. There is no difference in disabled children about this subject. Beautiful mouth and teeth are very important for general health of children. Children with beautiful and healthy teeth can chew better, pronounce the letters better more clearly and understandably. Aesthetic look of heathy teeth let children to have more self-trust. Medical, nutritional, emotional problems of disabled children cause insufficient oral and dental care as well. Also, taking them to dentist’s office and having their treatment done is a very difficult task. Thanks to preventive dentistry applications, it is possible to prevent financial and spiritual problems of all these treatments. These applications prevent unnecessary dental treatments and negative psychological affection in each treatment.
