There are many causes of orthodontic problems. These are congenital and environmental causes. Tooth height-jaw size relation is at the top of congenital causes. “Crowding teeth” is inevitable if patient’s teeth are so large to fit in the jaw bone. Also, position of upper and lower jaws according to each other and basis of the head is about genetic transmission. The condition of lower jaw being very up front which we may see around is among the most common genetically transmitted skeletal irregularities. These orthodontic problems can be diagnosed and treated easily with early diagnostic methods. It is very important to begin the treatment early in correction of skeletal anomalies.
An important part of orthodontic problems occur due to early loss of milk teeth. Unfortunately, milk teeth are not cared sufficiently. Milk teeth do not only function in mastication, but also they support development of jaw bone and act as a space holder for the permanent teeth that will erupt.
First molar teeth erupt under the present milk teeth in the ages 6-7. In case of especially second milky molar teeth’s early retraction, permanent molar teeth comes forward which erupts in the age 6, and it may close the space of premolar teeth which will come out in 11-12. In this case, either premolar or canine tooth which erupts the last may stay impacted. This condition is very common and it could be prevented easily. First condition for preventing this is that oral care habits must be acquired in the first days of milk tooth eruption and various protective materials must be used for prevention of tooth decay. A pedodontist may help for this subject. For decayed milk teeth which occurred although all these precautions, special fillings to the milk teeth should be used and falling out of these teeth should be observed until they fall themselves in a natural process. During this period, control visits must be planned each 6 months even in perfectly healthy children and x-ray graphs should be taken when necessary, tooth eruption should be followed.
In cases of milk teeth presence which are too damaged to keep in mouth, your pedodontist may extract these teeth. In this case, if there is more than a year until the second premolar teeth erupt, space holders may be necessary to use for preventing the molar teeth to erupt forward (this phase may be between the ages 6 and 11). Space holders may be fixed or removable depending on the doctor’s preferences and they may be kept in mouth until the second permanent premolar teeth erupt. Healthy milk teeth of your children will let permanent teeth to be healthy too. Therefore, your children must be gained a habit of tooth brushing, protectors should be used for prevention of decay formation in erupting teeth and process of eruption should be followed by an orthodontist.
